The African Light Source

What Is a Synchrotron?

A synchrotron is a type of particle accelerator that produces exceptionally bright beams of X-rays, infrared light and ultraviolet light. Scientists use these beams to study materials, biological systems, engineering structures and chemical processes with extraordinary precision.

Synchrotron facilities support research in renewable energy, healthcare, environmental science, advanced manufacturing, heritage science and many other disciplines.

Why Does Africa Need One?

Access to large-scale scientific infrastructure is essential for research excellence and innovation. Although more than 55 synchrotron facilities currently operate worldwide, Africa remains without one.

  • Develop scientific leadership and technical expertise.
  • Support innovation in energy, health and agriculture.
  • Reduce barriers to international research participation.
  • Create opportunities for future industry partnerships.
  • Strengthen Africa’s scientific infrastructure.

How RESTART Contributes

RESTART supports the long-term vision for an African Light Source by developing expertise in synchrotron science, accelerator technology and advanced materials research. The project provides training opportunities at international synchrotron facilities and supports the next generation of African scientists who may contribute to future technical design studies for an African synchrotron facility.

Looking Ahead

The African Light Source represents a vision for scientific excellence, knowledge sovereignty and innovation-led economic development across Africa.
